The Stephenson Middle School community firmly believes that all students have the right to a safe and healthy school environment. All students have the responsibility to dress appropriately and observe basic standards of cleanliness and grooming. A student’s dress and appearance should not cause a disruption in the educational process, nor should they create a health or safety concern for him/her or others.
The following excerpt is from the DeKalb County School System (DCSS) Dress Code Policy:
STUDENT DRESS CODE The atmosphere of a school must be conducive to learning. A student’s appearance can positively or negatively impact the climate of a school. Students must adhere to DeKalb School System dress code requirements. Students who fail to comply with the DeKalb School System dress code requirements, as enumerated below, may be charged with Offense #8b –Refusal to Follow Instructions and/or Offense #19a –Repeated Violations of School Rules:
•Students are expected to follow all school rules governing safety in specialized programs that may require the wearing of protective clothing, safety glasses, or other similar requirements. •The wearing of clothing, insignia, symbols, or adornments worn or carried on or about a student which promote the use of controlled substances, drugs, alcohol, or tobacco is prohibited. •The wearing of clothing which shows offensive and/or vulgar words, pictures, diagrams, drawings, or includes words or phrases of a violent nature, a disruptive nature, a sexual nature, or words or phrases that are derogatory regarding a person’s ethnic background, color, race, national origin, religious belief, sexual orientation, or disability is prohibited.
The wearing of pants below the waist line, bare midriffs, halter tops/tank tops, short shorts, net/see through garments and dresses, pants, or skirts with high splits are prohibited.
Students who violate the dress code will be required to change clothes and/or call home for a change of clothes. Students having to wait for a parent to bring a change of clothes will wait in the In-School Suspension room until the parent arrives. School administrators have the final authority to determine when personal appearance and dress do not meet school standards. As stated in the DCSS dress code policy, students who fail to comply may be charged with Offense #8b–Refusal to Follow Instructions and/or Offense #19a–Repeated Violations of School Rules. Depending on the child’s disciplinary record, violation of these charges may result in disciplinary actions that range from a phone call home to any of the following: work detail, in-team suspension, Saturday detention, in-school suspension, out of school suspension, or referral to the Student Evidentiary Hearing Committee (SEHC), which could result in expulsion from Stephenson Middle School.
It is essential for parents to recognize that enforcement of the dress code not only addresses unnecessary disruptions in the school, but it also addresses safety concerns. By virtue of not following the dress code, anyone with unscrupulous intentions can bring unsafe, objectionable items into the building. Your child has a more comprehensive list of prohibited items in his/her agenda (student planner). Parents, your assistance with this will ensure that Stephenson Middle School remains one of DeKalb’s PREMIER middle schools.
