A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Redan Parents,

July, 2011

Dear Redan Elementary Parents,

Welcome back to the 2011-2012 academic school year. I hope that you are having a wonderful summer break and share our enthusiasm as we prepare for a successful school year of student learning. The faculty and staff at Redan Elementary are committed to helping each student reach their optimal level of academic achievement in a nurturing and supportive learning environment.

As we begin this school year we welcome the following teachers and staff to Redan Elementary School. Ms. Falana, fourth grade teacher, Mr. Stamps, fifth grade teacher, Mrs. McGrady, Discovery teacher, and Mr. Thornton, Art teacher. We are pleased to also welcome Mr. Atchison, paraprofessional to the exceptional education program, and Ms. Tkacik returning as the Prevention Intervention Specialist.

Recognizing the importance of maintaining a highly structured and organized educational environment we will continue to “strive to raise the bar” and “exceed all expectations”. The following goals have been developed for the 2011-2012 academic school year.

• Students will adhere to a strict code of conduct that encourages self-discipline and promotes school spirit with high academic standards and high expectations in a nurturing educational environment.

• Teachers will implement a comprehensive and rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum based on the Georgia Performance Standards that promote critical thinking and higher order thinking skills.

• Administrators, Teachers, Parents, and Students will promote effective communications skills through collaborative efforts designed to increase parental involvement and create a highly effective educational environment.

Parents are encouraged to support the educational, personal, and social development of their child by ensuring that he or she attends school regularly and arrives on time (7:30 a.m.) in the required uniform Monday through Friday (red, yellow, and white shirts with navy or khaki pants, skirts, skorts, or dresses, and solid black, brown or white tennis shoes). Please review and discuss with your child the DeKalb School district’s Code of Student Conduct - Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook and the consequences of their actions. We will hold every child accountable for their behavior and academic performance.

I have enclosed a calendar of important dates as we prepare for the 2011-2012 school year. Please take a moment to review the calendar and plan accordingly. We will continue to provide you with updates of calendar events throughout the school year. Please be reminded that New and Returning Student Registration / Open House is scheduled for August 3, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Student agendas including the student handbook will be available for purchase at Open House for a minimum fee of $3.55. We encourage parents to join our local PTA, membership dues are $7.00. PTA will sponsor its first Student Picture Day with Life Touch Photography on August 29, 2011. Don’t miss the opportunity to capture your child’s first month of school image. The packages A-G will range from $12.00 to $32.00, additional information regarding picture packages will be provided at Open House on August 3, 2011.

I invite each of you to join us as we embark upon the journey that will allow all of our students to experience academic success in a supportive learning environment. I look forward to working with you to ensure the success of our students. If I can be of assistance, please feel free to contact me at 678-676-3502.

Sincerely,

Dr. Deborah M. Cowan Steele, Principal
