Hawthorne Parental Involvement Policy
2009-2010 (Draft:1/27/09)

The PTA has published recommendations for parental involvement that will be considered with the NCLB reauthorization. “Studies have documented that regardless of the family’s economic, ethnic, or cultural background, parents’ active involvement in a child’s education is a major factor in determining success in school”, (PTA.org). In order to maximize the success of Hawthorne students, the following programs are planned to involve parents:

Faculty Orientation:
Faculty Orientation addresses the value and utility of the contributions of parents and how to reach out to communicate with and work with parents as equal partners to build ties between home and school. The overview of the following provides a framework for teachers to communicate these expectations to our families:

• Review the Consolidated School Improvement Plan to guide instruction and school improvement efforts. During this process, teachers are provided data to determine appropriate instructional strategies for each student that are aligned to the Georgia Performance Standards.
• Identify Better Seeking Teams to serve as the School Improvement Committees. Parents, students, and the faculty members will comprise these teams. The role of these committees is to serve as support in specific areas of instruction or community-school development. The goal of the committees is to oversee the implementation of the School Improvement action plans, collect data and strategically address school related issues such as the Safe School Plan, the Discipline Policy, and school attendance.

Curriculum Night:
Parents receive information related to their child’s grade level including the Georgia Performance Standards, Syllabus, Parental involvement expectations, the timely explanation of the school’s curriculum, mission statement, and discipline and attendance policies.

Communication Tools:
Communication between home and school should be regular, two way, and meaningful. Hawthorne Elementary uses the following communication efforts to provide families with timely information about the academic progress of the students:

• Weekly Backpack Bites (school newsletter)
• Weekly Hornet Express
